Complete precision vacuum pump regulator assembly with vacuum gauge and push-fit hosetail barb connectors.

The ability to accurately control the level of vacuum pressure in a vacuum bagging, vacuum bonding or vacuum de-gassing process cannot be underestimated.

When vacuum bagging for example, pulling a 'full vacuum' on the project can lead to 'over-bleeding' where too much resin is removed from the laminate, leaving the surface finish pitted and dry. Likewise, vacuum pressure bonding at full vacuum can crush more delicate core structures. The answer is to precisely control the level of vacuum using an adjustable vacuum regulator.

This state-of-the-art vacuum regulator from SMC is the perfect solution. Simply connect the regulator in-line with your composites vacuum pump and turn the dial on the regulator to precisely control the vacuum pressure on the other side of the regulator. We include an accurate vacuum gauge with the regulator and have included push fit hosetail barb connectors on the vacuum side and the 'set' side so that the regulator can be easily added to any set-up simply by linking it in with 8mm ID silicone hose.

Typical Uses

  • Vacuum Bagging (virtually essential for class A finish parts)
  • Vacuum Degassing (where reduced vacuum pressure is recommended for some materials)
  • Vacuum Pressure Bonding (of delicate structures)

Further Information

Maximum Pump Capacity

Please note, this regulator is suitable for use with our smaller EC4 Compact Vacuum Pump and other vacuum pumps with a maximum displacement of 140l/min. If used with a higher capacity vacuum pump (such as our DVP EC20), the regulator will not be able to regulate pressures in the lower half of its normal range (i.e. below 50% vacuum).

Leakage

Although this high quality vacuum regulator offers much less leakage than conventional regulators, its normal operation does still require a very small atmospheric intake (leak) which will typically be less than 0.6l/min.

There will always be a very slight leak through the regulator and so if you wanted to turn the pump off after the desired pressure was reached, you would need to clamp off the vacuum hose before the regulator using a Line Clamp. Remember though that if you turn the pump off in this way you must be 100% sure that your bag is perfectly sealed otherwise even a tiny leak in the bag or seal will cause the vacuum level in the bag to reduce.

The adjustment dial is non-indexing, so the limitation on sensitivity is the accuracy of the gauge which is marked at 0.5inHg intervals.

Yes, certainly. The hosetail barbs we supply already fitted to the regulator simply screw into a 1/4" BSP female fitting (which in turn is fitted to the regulator via an 'O' ring). You could inscrew the hosetail barb and replace it with any fitting that has a 1/4"BSP male thread.

The right vacuum level depends on several things, namely what you’re bagging, what films or breathers you are using and what the priorities are in terms of surface finish vs weight. We find that for a good cosmetic finish (i.e. as few pin-holes as possible) that a lower vacuum level, in the 20% region, is best. For weight-critical structural work then higher levels (up to 100%) are sometimes preferable though to avoid bleeding the laminate too dry, limited use of perforated film and breather would be required. 20% is a good starting point which you can vary depending on your requirement and the results you get.
