Permabond ET538 is a two-part structural epoxy adhesive with a long working, very good adhesion to a range of substrates including metals, composites, wood and ceramic, as well as some plastics. Its thixotropic consistency and long working time make it particularly well suited to bonding applications requiring gap filling and filleting, such as honeycomb core bonding and bulkhead installation.
ET538 is mid-grey in colour. This thixotropic adhesive is suitable for gap-filling up to 5mm and can easily be applied to vertical surfaces (including filleting) without slumping. It has good resistance to petrol, oil and water.
Main Characteristics
Working time | Handling Strength | Working Strength | Full Cure | Hot Strength | Mix Ratio | Gap Fill |
2hrs | 3-5hrs | 24hrs | 72hrs | 90°C | 1:1 | 5mm |
Pack Sizes and Dispensing
ET538 is available in 50ml or 400ml pack sizes which can be selected at the top of the page. Both pack sizes use 1:1 ratio cartridges and require a suitable cartridge dispenser gun.
The cartridges are intended to be used with static mixer nozzles which fully mix the two components as they pass through the nozzle. They are supplied with one nozzle but once used, adhesive cures in the nozzle and they need to be discarded. Additional nozzles are available to buy separately:

Yes, certainly. In fact the easiest way to do this is to simply leave the static mixer nozzle in place after you use the adhesive. The adhesive that's in the nozzle will have been mixed and so will cure but the glue at the start of the nozzle will be unmixed and not cured meaning the nozzle will twist off perfectly and the glue inside will have been protected from the atmosphere and so will be perfectly preserved ready for use.
A typical application of the adhesive is approximately a 0.5mm thick layer. At this thickness, one 50ml cartridge would cover an area 30cm by 30cm; a 400ml cartridge would cover an area approximately 90cm by 90cm.
For best results when gluing over a large surface area, use a spreader to help ensure the adhesive is laid down in an even layer.
There is no practical minimum bond thickness for this adhesive although you do need to ensure that *some* adhesive is present, which is why glass spheres are sometimes used to prevent the adhesive from being scraped off completely. Essentially though, as long as an even thin film is applied the bond strength between the two materials will be good.
The best use of this adhesive is to spread it in an even and thin layer over the panel you wish to bond the honeycomb to. You should aim for a layer no more than 0.5mm thick using plastic spreaders or similar to even-out the adhesive. Spread thinly like that, one 400ml tube should cover approximately 1 square meter. Press the honeycomb onto the adhesive and gently move it around very slightly to ensure the glue forms a slight fillet onto the honeycomb cell walls to get maximum bonding surface area.
The shelf life of ET538 is 12 months from date of manufacture.
I used this epoxy adhesive to bond anodized aluminum inserts to carbon fiber. While holes are blind and inserts surface is smooth, I never experienced any bonding failure. Just carefully cleaned both parts with isopropyl alcohol before the bond. In my case, its slow curing properties really helps and let enough time for proper assembly alignement
