This page is the first carbon project undertaken by Ste from The DIY Tuners - skinning his RX7 door handles with Kevlar.
Ste got the idea from something he had seen by MAZDASPEED that made carbon 'look' door handles in the 1990's and early noughties. They were really desirable in the RX7 world so therefore commanded what we call 'JDM Tax' in the Japanese car World.
Ste wondered why no-one skinned their original handles and discovered that the general consensus was that it was very difficult due to handle clearance issues - but he likes a good challenge and decided to give it a go using Kevlar.
Ste learnt a lot on this first project, he said that the skinned parts came out quite well but he would have liked the weave to lay a little straighter.
Ste is a 30 year old aircraft engineer in the Royal Air force working on Eurofighter Typhoons, He started a YouTube channel to share his journey of modified cars with Liam who soon after left to work in Saudi Arabia (he's due back soon so Ste can put his feet up).
His interest in composite work came through working on an aircraft that is mainly composite and seeing how strong components could be. Also being in the modified/performance car scene carbon was often used both structurally and aesthetically.
Ste came across our Easy Composites channel and once realised he could use carbon fibre at home that was it, before that he had only seen aircraft grade prepreg that required specific cold storage and timed heating processes etc. our channel opened his eyes to the possibilities of what could be achieved at home.
