Lantor coremat is a traditional coremat or bulking mat used to quickly build up thickness in basic fibreglass moulds and components. The mat has a relatively high resin uptake but still lower than solid laminate, allowing thickness to be built up with less resin and less weight. Standard coremat is not suitable for resin infusion, vacuum bagging or RTM/lite.
The roll is 1m wide. Available in 1.4mm, 3mm and 5mm thickness. Sold by the linear metre.

Coremat is the cheapest and simplest of the core materials used in advanced composites and is compatible with all standard resin systems.
Technically, Coremat is a polyester nonwoven material that contains microspheres. Since the microspheres are 'closed' they take up space without absorbing resin meaning that even when fully 'wetted out' Coremat will be considerably lighter than GRP.
Coremat requires no special equipment or expertise and can easily be integrated into any composite part increasing its stiffness or reducing its weight.
Typisch gebruik
Coremat is often used in the following applications:
Voordelen
Like any core material, Coremat can be used to increase the thickness of a laminate, thus making it stiffer, without adding as much weight as would be added if more reinforcement, such as woven glass or chopped strand mat, was used instead. The weight saving is around 30% for the same thickness over GRP.
Use of Coremat to 'bulk out' a part will also reduce the lamination time and reduce the cost of a part on a thickness for thickness basis. Coremat is also highly effective as a print-through barrier to reduce the visible surface print-through caused by the uneven texture of chopped strand mat.

Thicknesses
We stock Coremat Xi in 1.4mm, 3mm and 5mm thicknesses; please choose the thickness you require from the drop-down list at the top of the page.
Compatibility
Lantor Coremat is compatible with epoxy, polyester, vinylester and phenolic resin systems.
Coremat is suitable for use in hand layup (wet lay) and spray lamination (used for large parts) and as a core mat for fibreglass. It is not suitable for use in vacuum bagging, resin infusion or pre-preg manufacture where elevated pressure will compress the material and prevent it from working as it should.

The quoted thickness is the nominal thickness prior to processing. Coremat will compress under vacuum and as such is not suitable for vacuum bagging or resin infusion. Instead, for resin infusion or vacuum bagging we would recommend Lantor Soric instead. Soric is designed to not compress under vacuum and so maintains its low density and thickness.

Although coremat can be helpful in reducing print-through, this generally refers to larger scale print through from things like supporting frames or structures, rather than finer print through from the surface plies of reinforcement. For this, we would recommend doing what you're already doing which is to use a tissue, then optionally lightweight CSM, then the heavier CSM. Another option which can be very effective, depending on the shape and complexity of your mould, can be to use a lightweight woven glass, like a 100gsm; in our experience that can result in gelcoat with less print even than when using a tissue.
Coming back to the Coremat, for mould making, Coremat can be very useful for quickly adding thickness to your moulds and in fact we do use it quite often, particularly on larger, flatter moulds. As a 'print blocker' it's better to think about its use underneath those larger features, like support frames, where the Coremat can act like a 'spreader' underneath the frame, reducing the pressure points that can often telegraph all the way through the laminate.
