16mm (14mm) Pultruded Carbon Fibre Hexagon Tube 

High strength pultruded carbon fibre Hexagon tube with a 16mm OD and 14mm ID (1mm wall thickness). This precision made carbon fibre heaxgon tube is suitable for a wide range of applications including radio controlled models, electronics, robotics and similar. The tube is manufactured to tight tolerances using high strength carbon fibre and an epoxy resin matrix for maximum performance.

Available in 1m and 2m lengths.

Pultruded carbon fibre hexagon tube manufactured from 100% unidirectional carbon fibre.

The tube has an outer diameter (OD) of 16mm and a wall thickness of 1mm leaving an inner diameter (ID) of 14mm.

Typical Uses

This 1mm thick medium diameter 16mm hexagon section is ideally suited for use in radio controlled (RC) aircraft, helicopters, U.A.V's and other models but would be equally suited to other precision applications like robotics and automation.

Pultrusion Explained

Pultruded hexagon tubes, although less commonly used compared to round carbon fibre tubes, are still very strong and with the hexagon of flat sides, can be uniquely suited to applications where other components are to be attached during assembly. The flat sides provide a convenient surface for mounting other parts, be it bonded into place using a structural adhesive or fixed by other means. Pultrusion is a method of manufacturing continuous lengths of fibre reinforced section (in this case Hexagon shape tube) by pulling continuous strands of carbon fibre through resin and a former before curing the resin all in one process.

Pultruded hexagon tubes feature 100% longitudinal fibre orientation which gives them excellent strength along their length but does make them vulnerable to crushing forces. For applications where none-uniform forces are likely to be encountered, including crushing forces, roll wrapped carbon fibre tubes should be considered as an alternative.

How to Cut and Shape

This carbon fibre tube can easily be cut and finished using simple workshop tools like a hacksaw and some wet-and-dry paper. Cutting and finishing a carbon fibre tube can also be perfectly safe if you follow some basic safety precautions.

Many people prefer the natural finish of these carbon products, however if you wish to paint them for your specific application then you can do so. A light key with a fine abrasive paper like a 1200 grit wet and dry paper and a thorough degrease and clean using mild detergent or an alcohol wipe should be all that is needed to prepare the surface for paint.

Generally, the pultrusions are used ‘as-is’ and don’t require painting. No, this pultrusion is manufactured from standard modulus fibres.

We do not currently offer a custom cutting service for our tubes and pultrusions. However, they are able to be cut DIY relatively easily as you can see from our tutorial video: How to Cut Carbon Fibre Sheet, Tube and Parts

Unfortunately it is not possible to cut a usable thread into carbon fibre composites. The nature of the material is such that the teeth on a thread would not be able to take any load and would break up either during thread turning or the first attempt at using the thread.

Where it is desirable to have a threaded method of attaching the tube or rod, it is commonplace to fabricate and then bond an aluminium insert into the tube or over the rod end which can then have a thread cut into it.

In simple terms these carbon rods would work with linear bearings in that fashion. The only concern is long term durability as the carbon surface is not quite as hard as aluminium and thus would likely wear quicker in many circumstances. For low usage or low load situations this may well not be a limiting factor.

The HDT of these pultrusions is 80 °C.
