200g 2x2 Twill Carbon Black Twaron Cloth (1000mm)

200gsm carbon/Twaron® hybrid reinforcement fabric offers virtually the same properties as carbon/Kevlar® but without the bright yellow colour of Kevlar fibre, providing a more subtle appearance without compromising on performance. The black Twaron fibre is also more UV stable than Kevlar and won't discolour in sunlight like Kevlar will making this fabric a fantastic choice for outdoor equipment like canoes and kayaks. The fabric is woven in a classic 2x2 twill weave giving it great drape and conformability.

This fabric is available in 1.0m (1000mm) width and sold by the linear metre.

Amazing new carbon aramid hybrid fabric with all the strength and performance of traditional black/yellow carbon/Kevlar® but using new black aramid Twaron® yarn.

The performance properties of Twaron®, including tensile strength, elongation to break, abrasion resistance and heat resistance are all every bit as good as yellow Kevlar® and so this hybrid fabric is just as well suited to demanding applications including motorsport panels, canoes, kayaks, race seats and anywhere else that carbon/Kevlar® would be specified. The distinct difference is that the Twaron yarn is a deep black colour meaning that parts made using the fabric don't have the bright yellow threads running through them which are both conspicuous and subject to fading in sunlight.

How to Buy

This roll is 1m (39") wide and the fabric is sold by the linear metre. The unit price shown is for 1 linear metre but volume discounts automatically apply for larger quantities of fabric.

Please purchase the number of linear metres you require. When purchasing multiple metres the fabric will be supplied in one continuous length on a roll.

Further Information

The Appearance of Carbon/Black Twaron®

The black Twaron® fibres used in this hybrid fabric appear to be even blacker in colour than carbon fibres and so cured laminates made using this amazing fabric do have a slightly different appearance to 100% carbon fabrics, in fact many would comment that this hybrid fabric has an even more '3D' effect than regular carbon.

Below is an image of a cured sheet made using carbon/black Twaron® where the darker tows are the Twaron® and the lighter tows are the carbon.

Working with Carbon/Black Twaron®

This great new black carbon twaron cloth can be used in exactly the same way as carbon/aramid (carbon/Kevlar) and is fully compatible with all laminating processes including wet-lay, vacuum bagging and resin infusion. As withblack Kevlar®, Twaron® is difficult to cut with normal scissors and will make trimming of laminated parts more difficult because of its tenacity.

Background to Twaron®

Twaron® is manufactured by Teijin Aramid and is their flagship para-aramid fibre. The Twaron® used in this hybrid is manufactured at their plant in Europe and is the leading aramid fibre, alongside DuPont's Kevlar® fibre. Black Twaron® is the latest development from Teijin in response to the problem of yellow aramid fibre discolouring quickly in sunlight.

For wet-lay lamination you will use approximately the same weight of resin as the weight of the fabric. For example, with a 200gsm cloth, for 1 square metre you will have 200g of fabric and thus will need 200g of resin to wet it out, plus a small amount of wastage for the brush and mixing pot.

'3k' is the filament count or tow size. It simply means that each 'bunch' of carbon fibres that this cloth is woven from is made up of 3000 individual carbon filaments. Bigger counts (6k, 12k etc.) means chunkier 'bunches' of carbon so chunkier fabrics.

Thickness of any reinforcement is dependent on consoldation (how much it's 'squashed down'. For this reason we generally give out thickness figures for when the reiforcement is consoldated under vacuum (1bar); this seems like the most useful figure. For example, a 90gsm carbon, a single layer, compressed under vacuum, would be about 0.1mm thick. For a 200gsm carbon a single layer would be about 0.25mm thick. This is the number you see listed under 'thickness' in the specification table.

You can purchase a sample of our fabrics here.

Well, this depends entirely on what reinforcement you're laminating, speficically how thick and heavy it is. If you're laminating 5mm of carbon fibre you'll use a lot more resin that if you're laminating just 1mm of it. Fortunately though there a really quick rule to get a good estimate - simply add up the total weight of your reinforcement and you'll probably need the same weight in resin. This means that if you're laminating 5 layers of 200g carbon (so a total of 1000g of carbon) then you'll want about 1000g (i.e. 1kg) of Epoxy Resin. If it was 2 layers of 450g glass then you'd need about 900g per square metre.

The carbon fabric itself will survive many hundreds of degrees and is not the limiting factor for almost all applications. The limiting factor will be the heat distortion temperature of the resin system you plan to laminate this fabric with.

An engine rocker/cam cover may easily be exposed to hot oils at around 120°C as well as heat from the exhaust which would be dependent on the engine configuration and level of tune. As such we would recommend considering using a higher temperature resin system such as our Very High Temperature Epoxy Laminating Resin which, with an appropriate post-cure, can be used up to 180°C.

An alternative option would be to consider making the part with an out of autoclave pre-preg carbon fibre where typically the resin systems can achieve a HDT up to 120°C.

For very critical applications, such as aerospace, even dry carbon fabrics will be 'lifed' due to very gradual degradation of the sizing on the fibres, however in practice, for most applications, the degradation is minimal and most users would consider dry fabrics to not have a shelf life when stored appropriately.

All Carbon fibres are naturally charcoal black in colour.

This Carbon Twaron based fabric uses a high modulus Twaron fibre.

No, this fabric is not suitable for use in clothing garments. For abrasion and cut resistance, we would recommend our Kevlar Protective Textiles range of fabrics as all of them are suitable for use in various parts of garment manufacture dependent on exact properties you desire.

Twaron, like Kevlar, is the brand name for an aramid based fabric. As such, like all unprotected aramids, the Twaron will degrade slowly in UV light.

Yes, almost all of our fabrics can be successfully used in the skinning process including the Carbon Black Twaron which will give you a nice bold pattern on the finished part.

The only thing to keep in mind is that Twaron is an aramid fibre (like Kevlar) which means it's incredibly tenacious and resistant to abrasion. This means that if you sand down into it during the flatting process it will fluff up rather that rub away which can make life very difficult. If you are careful not to break down into the fabric when sanding then you should be fine.

One significant advantage of the black Twaron (compared to yellow Kevlar) is that the Twaron will not discolour in sunlight. This is making the material very popular with canoe/kayak manufacturers. The UV stability of the resin you use would still be a factor though because epoxy resins may well discolour slightly in UV light, even if the carbon/Twaron underneath doesn't.
