The 14mm aramid tape is a flat braid made from high quality Twaron 2200 1210 aramid fibre (a direct equivalent to Kevlar fibre) in such a way that the braid is 'flat', i.e. it is not a tube/sleeve but instead resembles a densely woven tape. The fibre orientation of the tape is +/- 45 degrees which means that the braid is ideally suited to handling torsional loads, affords excellent conformity (drape) without buckling the fibres and resists crack propagation.

Aramid flat braid is used as a very high strength tape for joining composite panels or protecting joins in composite panels, most commonly around the seam of kayaks, canoes and other small boats.

Aramid flat braid is compatible with all conventional resin systems including polyester, vinylester and epoxy resin. Most commonly, the braid is applied to the outside seam of canoes and kayaks so completely overlap the join between the upper and lower hull mouldings. The braid is then simply wet-out with epoxy resin and then once cured, over-painted once more with another coat of epoxy resin to create an extremely tough, durable and protective join.

Typical Uses

Aramid flat braid can be put to excellent use in a wide range of composite and none-composite applications including:

  • Joining and protecting the join of canoe/kayak shells
  • Reinforcing radial connections
  • Reinforcement for pultrusion profiles
  • Use in abrasion resistant protective garments
  • Fire-toys (wound around spinners/sticks etc. to retain the fuel)
  • General composites applications as a very strong reinforcement tape

How to Buy

This 14mm flat aramid braid is sold by the linear metre (with the braid at its natural 45° orientation) in a continuous length. For example; if you purchase a quantity of '5' you will receive a continuous length of braid 5m long. There is no minimum order quantity but several volume discounts are available for larger quantities.

Further Information

The lightweight flat braid on this page has a nominal width of 14mm although, in common with all braids, elongating or shortening the braid will change its width.

We stock aramid flat braid in three different specifications as follows:

Product Weight Stretched Width Width at 45° Stretched Weight
Lightweight 300g 14mm 300g/m² 10mm 14mm 3.9g/m

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for?Ask our technical team a question.

For wet-lay lamination you will use a bit more resin than the weight of the fabric. A typical fibre resin ratio for Aramid based fabrics is 45/55. For example, with a 300gsm cloth, for 1 square metre you will have 300g of fabric and thus will need 367g of resin to wet it out, plus a small amount of wastage for the brush and mixing pot.

You can purchase a sample of our fabrics here.

No. Our Kevlar Fabric is only available in the classic Kevlar yellow.

We do not currently stock any hybrid pre-pregs either as carbon-aramid mix or pure aramid

Aramid and Diolen laminates can be drilled into using a HSS drill bit designed for drilling steel. Start with a pilot hole and work up the diameter until the desired hole size is achieved. Any aramid/diolen fluff can be cut off with a sharp Stanley blade or scalpel.
