Getting Started
How difficult is it?
Transforming your existing countertops with a GlassCast Countertop Kit is far easier than you might imagine and certainly an entirely realistic project for any keen DIYer.
For a small sized kitchen with around 4m of worktop (2sqm area), the whole process is likely to take around 3hrs, much of which is prep. Certainly it’s far quicker, and far cheaper than replacing the work surfaces themselves!
The GlassCast countertop tutorial covers the whole process from start-to-finish and has been made to be as honest and realistic as possible. If you have any questions or hesitations after watching the video, please get in touch with our friendly team and we’d be only too happy to advise you.
What else will I need?
In addition to the resin and pigments included in the kit, the other things you will need to complete your countertop transformation are a hair-dryer, some form of barrier tape and a few ancillaries like mixing buckets and abrasive paper.
To make life easy, a complete set of all tools and ancillaries needed (excluding hair dryer!) is available in our accessories section and just pick up what you don’t already have.
Scratches and Heat Resistance
Although a GlassCast resin countertop look just like a natural stone countertop, it is still a resin surface and will need to be treated properly in order to keep it looking its best.
Scratch Resistance of Epoxy Countertops
In general, epoxy resin is a very hard-wearing material and will stand up very well to normal daily use. Even still, you should use common sense and always use a chopping board avoid cutting or chopping directly on the surface or dragging sharp or abrasive things around on it.
If you do find that your worktops have accumulated some scratches over time, the great news is that they can be quickly restored by flatting with a fine abrasive paper and then polished back to their original gloss with a polishing compound.
Heat Resistance of Epoxy Countertops
Whilst different manufacturers (many from the US) make various claims about the heat resistance of their epoxy resin, we have never found a countertop resin with better heat resistance than GlassCast. That said, it is still possible to lightly mark any resin countertop if hot plates or very hot drinks are placed and left directly on it. The good news is that these marks do tend to ‘bounce back’ after time, often leaving no mark at all or can easily be polished out if needs be.
Just like a laminate or wooden worktop, very hot objects - such as a pan taken directly from the oven or off the hob - should never by placed directly onto the resin surface because they will mark it. However, if this were to accidentally happen, the results are usually less obvious than they would be on a wood or laminate worktop and can generally be rectified more easily.

I thought I'd leave a comprehensive review to help other purchaser. First this product is brilliant, result is stunning and kit well thought off. It is extremely low VOC. Bravo. I am severely allergic to VOCs and I did not have any reaction whatsoever. As a precaution I left the bay window open nonetheless. The things to watch out for: 1. PREP. They demo on brand new material, your countertop is not likely to be. I think washing down with sugar soap is a necessary step before sanding down. I have loads of tiny holes where the resin did not adhere, and my hunch is that there may have been spots of grease and silicone. That brings me to the silicone. The resin will NOT adhere to silicone, so it pulled back and beaded all along the splashback. I am going to fix that by running another thin bead of black silicone. This is an additional job however. So either remove the silicone or be prepared, like I am, to redo your silicone. 2. PRIMER COAT, use the roller you can purchase in the accessories..I didn't and it is a shame. If you a bit on the slow slide, brush strokes will show as it takes some times to spread the resin with a brush. 3. FINAL COAT. Mix and divide your main mix 2 or 3 times. For a start, you cannot lift and pour a 2kg bucket full of resin with the one hand. 3. The heat generated by the chemical process will make your resin go off much quicker. I got caught, and did not have enough resin for the edge: over half had set hard in the bucket ! Really frustrated by that, so my straight edge is rough. I have purchased a copper strip to cover it: additional cost and work. Basically if you can be 2 people, it is better. The open time is short, and 2 sqm for an inexperience person with a bucket that's too heavy, a brush in one hand and a hairdryer in the other is a lot of ground to cover The perfectionist I am is frustrated by the pits and the peels and the rough edges, but I can tell you, visitors are more than impressed though. The resin is touch dry in 24h, but do leave a good full5 days before putting anything on it.
