This special black version of the NW1 polishing compound combats the problem of 'white spots' on the laminate surface when white polishing compound accumulates in small surface pin-holes making NW1 Black an excellent choice when polishing or restoring carbon fibre parts which use a clear gelcoat.

Pai Cristal NW1 Black is a remarkably advanced 'super cutting' compound designed to offer very rapid cutting through to polishing of composite moulds and parts from P1200-1500 grit scratches up to a high gloss. NW1 Black can be used on new patterns or moulds or to restore faded or oxidised gelcoats on older moulds or parts.

NW1 Black's unique cutting technology makes means that a wide range of composite gelcoats can be polished to a high gloss in reduced time, including harder gelcoats like vinylester and epoxy which traditional polishing compounds struggle to remove scratches, resulting in heat build-up and much longer polishing time.

NW1 Black uses advanced particle technology to result in a cutting compound which progresses from rapid, coarse cutting through to find finishing all from one compound. As polishing progresses, the cutting particles gradually break down, becoming smaller and smaller and allowing NW1 Black to take a mould from P1200 scratches through to a good level of gloss in a single compound.

How to Use

For best results, NW1 should be used with a variable speed polisher, selecting either an anti-scratch SL3 fine wool pad for a heavier cutting action or a medium-hard foam pad for a less aggressive one.

Apply a small quantity of compound on the polisher-pad or mop. Let the polisher turn at low revolutions, speeding them up (800-1500 RPM) while spreading the paste with crossed movements. Be careful to not overheat the surface of the mould or part. If heat starts to build up, reduce the speed or pressure or wait for the heat to dissipate.

If necessary, please repeat the application of the compound but always allow sufficient working of a new application to allow the compound to break down and transition from a cutting to a glossing action again.

Wipe the polished surface clean using a microfibre polishing cloth.

Further Finishing

Although NW1 Black can be considered a single stage polishing compound, if a very high level of gloss is required NW1 can be followed by Pai Cristal's TOPFINISH 2 'Nano' polishing compound which can be used to achieve ultra high gloss levels.

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for?Ask our technical team a question.

It's hard to say how much compound gets used when polishing because it rather depends on how many times you need to go forwards and backwards between compound and papers (often you find there are still scratches and need to go back to the papers again!). In really broad terms, which I think is all it's realistic to come up with, I would say that for a one-off project, even a large one like polishing a whole resin-coated table, then the smallest 100g packs would be sufficient. This would apply to both types of compound (NW1 and the TOPFINISH2).

If you're using compounds regularly, for example if you're making resin products as a business, then you would have either the 500g or 1kg packs in stock and work your way through them over a period of months, replacing when necessary. Certainly a 500g pack of NW1 would be more than enough compound for lots (maybe 10+) river tables, for example.
