Polypropylene Sheet

Smooth finish polypropylene sheet ideal for baseboards and temporary barriers in composite mould making and resin casting. This 3mm plastic sheet is sturdy enough to make straight and accurate barriers but thin enough to allow some flex, such as following a curved shape. Polypropylene is naturally self-releasing meaning that resins and gelcoats won't stick to it.

Sold in individual sheets in a range of sizes.

Polypropolyne Sheet, available in Natural colour, 3mm thick polypropylene plastic sheet suitable for a wide range of applications.

This low cost, sturdy plastic sheet is perfect for use as a baseboard for many pattern making and mould making projects. Resins like polyester, vinylester and epoxy will not stick to polypropylene which means that once cured the laminating pattern, mould or part can easily be removed from the board.

Because resin won't stick to the sheet it can also be used as a moulding surface for making your own composites sheet (such as carbon fibre sheet, fibreglass sheet or sandwich panel). No release agent or special treatment would be required.

Polypropylene sheet can also be cut in to strips to make flanges or extend flanges around the outside of a mould or to make a removable barrier such as is needed when making a split-mould.

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for?Ask our technical team a question.

The HDT of the polypropylene sheet is 70°C.

Yes gently with something like a heat gun will soften the sheet enough to allow it to bend. You can actually see us doing this with this sheet in one of our video tutorials: https://www.easycomposites.co.uk/learning/how-to-make-complex-multi-part-split-moulds

In normal use we would not expect the sheet to warp. If the resin gets very hot, the risk of it warping or distorting the sheet is higher.

You're right that for a short while, we did offer a 2m x 1m sheet size. The reason this sheet is no longer available on our website is because - over recent years - the couriers (TNT, FedEx, UPS, DHL etc.) have been overwhelmed by the amount of freight going through their networks and have really limited the amount of 'unconveyable' freight they will accept. Given the size of the large 2m x 1m sheet, it's almost impossible to find a courier service who is willing to carry such a large product. Whilst the 2m x 1m sheet could be sent on a double pallet, the cost of this is enormous and would be 10 or 20 times the cost of the sheet. Therefore, the answer is simply that it is not viable to ship large sheets of a low cost product like this in the current market.

Unfortunately due to package size and vulnerability to damage, the biggest sheet we can ship is 1m by 1m. We can supply 2m by 1m sheets but for collection only from our Stoke on Trent Trade counter.   You could tape together 2 sheets using some release tape but there would be a slight join line on the underside of the table.

Unfortunately not, it's not possible to polish low density thermoplastics like polypropylene; or at least not possible with any process that could be done at home. Really your only solution would be to polish the scratches out of the cured resin component instead.

Most glues will not bond well to polypropylene. However, hot melt glues work very well for the temporary bonding of polypropylene sheeting for use as mould boxes and mould flanges.

They are solid, smooth and glossy.

I guess this would depend on the size of the table. Given enough radius the polypropylene sheet would bend around it fine but if it's a small piece with a tight radius then you might want to look for a thinner sheet. Alternatively, make a barrier using a more flexible material and coat it in our Flash/Release Tape as the GlassCast resin will not stick to it.

Polypropylene can be cut and machined using conventional wood working tools and methods, if machining, care must be taken to avoid heat building up as the plastic can melt slightly and leave a poor edge, sharp blades and reasonably fast feed rates normally eliminate this problem.

Any burr left on the edge after cutting can be quickly cleaned-up using a sharp blade dragged sideways along the edge.

This polypropylene sheet is semi-translucent. It is a natural white colour which does allow some light to pass through.

No, this is a rigid plastic sheet. It's got some flex to it (it's not a particuarly tough plastic), but it's certainly not elastic.

I’ve just used this Polypropylene Sheet for the first time and I have to say it is superb. I’m making 2 resin lamps and did as was suggested using a glue gun to make the moulds. When it came to de moulding the glue came off really easy and the sheet literally just popped off the solid resin when I applied a little bit of pressure! They don’t break either so I can use these pieces again to make the same size moulds. Would definitely recommend.
