Alexander wanted to take part in a gravity racing competition so had to design and build his own racer. Moving away from more traditional designs, he went for a more aerodynamic shape to help reduce drag and increase speed.
Once he had designed the basic chassis, he had to create a pattern for the body itself. This was created by carving and shaping a foam block to the desired shape. Once sanded smooth and he was happy with the shape, he could then progress to making the body itself.
Using a mouldless construction method, similar to our Tutorial Video , the carbon fibre and diolen fabrics were wet laid over the foam pattern to make the body shell, then coated with XCR resin to smooth the outer finish.
Once the resins were cured, the body could be demoulded from the foam pattern then trimmed and finished off ready for installation on the Gravity Racer.
