Easy Composites' PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi-Gloss is a specially formulated polyester resin system designed to give a tough and very polishable surface to composite patterns that have been surfaced using PCP Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Primer or which already have a smooth, high density surface such as model board or tooling block.

PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi-Gloss pattern making gloss coat can also be mixed with PCP Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Primer to improve the hardness and glossiness of the Primer. Higher ratios of Hi-Gloss will mean a harder, glossier surface but reduce the high-build filling nature and fast sand-ability of the Primer.

How to Buy

PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi-Gloss pattern finishing gloss resin is available in handy 1kg and 5kg packs. Please choose the pack size your require from the drop-down list at the top of the page.

Further Information

Directions for Use

PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi-Gloss can be applied directly to PCP Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Primer finished patterns as well as higher density modelboards, tooling block and GRP. Patterns with a course surface should be first coated with PCP Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Primer then flatted to 240grit before application of PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi-Gloss.

  1. To ensure a good bond to the pattern surface (including PCP Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Primer), key the surface with a 240grit abrasive paper and remove any dirt or grease using acetone.
  2. If applying directly to a wood or MDF pattern (no PCP Polyester Pattern-Coat™ primer) it is suggested to paint the pattern with a thin coat of catalysed polyester resin, allow to cure and then flat back any raised grain or texture, repeating if necessary, before application of PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi Gloss.
  3. PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi-Gloss should be mixed with MEKP Catalyst at a ratio of 2% catalyst (can be adjusted according to pot-life required and ambient temperature). If spraying, see notes on thinning below.

Brush Application

Hi-Gloss can be applied by brush for excellent results although spray application (see below) will mean less finishing work is required.

  1. Apply PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi-Gloss to the prepared pattern using smooth brush strokes, attempting to leave an even layer or around 0.5mm.
  2. Allow the first application to cure to a 'B stage' (still tacky but firm) before applying a second layer of Hi-Gloss, as per the first layer.

Spray Application

Application by gelcoat spray gun will yield the best results and mean much less finishing work is required. When spraying, thin the PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi Gloss using pure acetone at a ratio of 25%.

  1. Start by spraying a 'mist coat' over the pattern. Wait 2-5 minutes for the solvents to evaporate.
  2. PCG Polyester Pattern-Coat™ Hi-Gloss can be applied wet-on-wet but sufficient time must be left between passes (2-5 minutes) to allow time for the solvent to evaporate. Around 5 passes should leave a sufficient thickness of Hi-Gloss to ensure the surface can be properly flatted.

Finishing

  1. Once initial cure is reached (around 3hours depending on ambient temperature) Hi-Gloss can be wet-sanded using abrasive papers from 120grit (following brush application) or 400grit (following spray application) up to 1200grit.
  2. The coating should then be allowed to cure fully (around 12hrs) before polishing by hand or machine polisher up to a stunning high gloss using NW1 White Super Cutting Compound.

Shelf Life and Storage

PCG Polyester Pattern‐Coat™ Hi Gloss should be stored in the dark in suitable closed containers. It is recommended that the storage temperature should be less than 20°C where practical, but it should not exceed 30°C. KEEP THE PACKING TIGHTLY SEALED WHEN NOT IN USE.

If stored under the above conditions the PCG Polyester Pattern‐Coat™ Hi Gloss will have a shelf life of 3 months, from the date of production.

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for?Ask our technical team a question.

The reason we can’t ship MEKP outside of the UK is because it is highly oxidizing, and standard carrier services do not permit it to be transported.

However you can purchase MEKP from any suppliers of composite materials including fibreglass (GRP) shops, roofing suppliers, boat buildings, car bodyshops etc. There is nothing special about the MEKP we supply, you can ask at your local supplier for ‘Standard reactivity MEKP’; brands such as Andanox KP9, Akperox A30, Butanox M50 (Akzo Nobel) are all suitable and  widely available.

Application by Gelcoat roller should give good results on flat surfaces as you will be able to get nice even application for each stroke of the roller. Care should be taken, when using a foam based roller, not to apply too much pressure as this can cause excessive aeration of the resin system.

Yes you can use Pattern-Coat Hi-Gloss on metal patterns (or parts). The surface would need to be degreased, cleaned and abraded to give a good key. Be aware that unsupported sheet metals can flex and such flex could crack the resin coating so care needs to be taken to avoid flex or support the metal pattern. If it’s a rigid metal part (like a vehicle panel) then this shouldn’t be a problem.

Acetone is ideal for cleaning the Hi-Gloss off the spray gun, or anything else for that matter, but you'll need to do it before the resin cures of course! These days 'thinners' can mean quite a few different materials and often doesn't work so well and wouldn't be recommended. Another option that does work is methylated spirits. However, acetone is still your best option.

Yes you can add the Polyester Pigment Dispersions to the Pattern Coat Gloss no problem. Generally you would still use around 5 to 10 percent pigment by weight to achieve a solid colour.

The Styrene content in the Pattern Coat HiGloss is likely to begin to soften/dissolve the ABS plastic. As such we would not recommend its use directly on top of ABS. However, subject to testing, you may find that with thicker and/or solid ABS prints that the softening effect is not enough to cause significant enough distortion to affect the finished shape and that in those situations the HiGloss could be used.

Good question! - Although we often warn against trying to release epoxy from polyester (patterns or moulds) our Pattern Coat products have been formulated to ensure that epoxy will release from them without any problems. You will of course need to use a suitable release agent; Easy-Lease, Number 8 Wax or PVA Mould Release Agent would all be suitable but make sure you apply them correctly, according to their instructions however given that you're using a 'Hi-Gloss' finish on your pattern, you'll probably want to avoid the PVA as it would leave 'swirls' in your mould finish.

We suggest applying the Hi-Gloss at a thickness of around 0.5mm which means 500g/m2; therefore a 1kg pack would cover 2sqm at this thickness.

I used the PCG with 25% acetone and a spray gun with a 1.5mm nozzle as a finishing coat after the PCP. The result is a very hard and glossy surface, but it's challenging to sand. Nowadays, I usually skip this step and take the mold directly from the PCP. However, with the right spray facilities and a good spray gun, the results might be different.
