What's Included in the Kit
The kit includes a high quality resin catch pot complete with vacuum gauge, valve and connector and re-usable silicone rubber resin infusion connectors. Also supplied with the kit is a complete set of vacuum bagging consumables selected specifically for resin infusion including vacuum bagging film, peel ply, infusion mesh, spiral and sealant tape.
As an option the kit can be supplied complete with our EC4 Compact Composites Vacuum Pump and IN2 Epoxy Infusion Resin. Please use the drop-down options at the top of the page to include these items.
What is Resin Infusion?
Resin infusion is a sophisticated technique for manufacturing high performance, void free composites even on large or complicated moulds. The process is ideally suited to the manufacture of carbon fibre composites and is widely used by professional manufacturers for the production of carbon fibre body panels such as bonnets and by marine manufacturers for the production of boat hulls, making this product ideal as a carbon fibre infusion kit. It is however, equally suited to the manufacture of smaller detailed items that would be all but impossible to make successfully using an open layup.
Reinforcement is laid into the mould 'dry', i.e. without any resin, and then enclosed in a specially configured stack of bagging materials (such as peel ply, infusion mesh and bagging film) before being subjected to vacuum pressure using a composites vacuum pump. Once all the air has been removed from the bag and the reinforcement has been fully compressed under atmospheric pressure, liquid epoxy resin (mixed with hardener) is introduced to the reinforcement through a pipe which then infuses through the reinforcement under the vacuum. Once the resin has fully infused through the reinforcement, the supply of resin is cut off (using a pipe clamp) and the resin is left to cure, still under vacuum.

Our Carbon Fibre 2/2 Twill 3k 200g is available in roll widths up to 1.5m wide which should suit most bonnets, especially when you remember that you can turn the 1.5m wide fabric sideways if you had a particularly wide bonnet (over 1.5m) that was less than 1.5m from front to back.
For wider panels you may want to try and make a feature out of the join, either creating a V weave type pattern or using carbon tape as a detailed stripe to hide the join.
Realistically for most projects, you need a dedicated infusion resin as you need the very low viscosity resin for it to infuse properly.
Most standard polyester laminating resins are too thick or too reactive. However there are specially developed low viscosity polyester 'infusion' resins that work well for resin infusion such as our IP2 Polyester Infusion Resin which is low viscosity, low reactivity and has excellent wetting out properties making it perfect for infusion where you don't need to top-end performance of an epoxy.
Yes, our peel ply is permeable to resin which makes it ideal to use in most laminating processes including wet-lay, vacuum bagging and resin infusion.
Our IN2 Epoxy Infusion Resin has a maximum Tg of 98°C and so you should NOT cure your parts at a temperature higher than this. To achieve full cure and maximum Tg in the shortest possible time, we would recommend loading the uncured part into an ambient temperature oven and then setting the oven to 100°C. Assuming the oven ramps at around 3 degrees per minute then the part should reach full cure in 2hrs. Allow it to cool fully before de-moulding. Please also remember that accelerated cures like this will need some experimentation.
Both scenarios are acceptable but each has its own considerations. To be able to switch the pump off, it's essential that the bag has no leaks at all. If you have a perfectly sealed bag then clamping off both lines and then switching off the pump is the best route. This will also result in the best surface finish because there's no danger that the pump starts to bleed the laminate too dry (which can result in pin holes). If you don't have a perfectly sealed bag and you do switch the pump off then the bag will lose pressure and you'll have a big problem so if you arn't confident that the bag is sealed then you'll need to keep the pump running. As mentioned, there's a danger that this will bleed the laminate too dry if you do this so always make sure you end the infusion mesh short of the vacuum connector and just have the connector sitting on peel-ply only - this 'resin break' will stop the resin from being drawn out of the laminate into the catch-pot and ensure you maintain a good surface on your parts.
The type of release agent to use would depend on the material the mould is made from. If it's an epoxy mould (like the one in the video) then our Easy-Lease is the perfect release agent. If it's something different (like polyester) then you'd need to use wax and PVA; the release agent more to do with the mould making side of things.
This is a very good starter kit. The vacuum pump is almost silent and leaves basically no oil mist. The only criticism would be that the consumables are folded, and that makes the layup a little more challenging, especially with the infusion mesh. I now order full rolls of the consumables, which makes it cheaper and they come delivered on a roll. The silicone connectors work fine for me, even after multiple uses. All in all, it's a very solid setup that is reliable.
I purchased the Easy Comps resin infusion starter kit after watching the bonnet making tutorial on YouTube. Before I bought the kit I was worried that the video made it look much easier than it is and that I wasn't actually going to be able to make good quality parts but I needn't have worried. The quality of the kit is great, it has everything you need to get started with resin infusion. I bought the kit with the DVP pump although it is possible to get cheaper vacuum pumps off ebay but I wasn't sure about the quality and what spec I would need. Anyway, in the end I'm glad I went for the DVP, it's a great pump, runs quiet, makes no smoke and I've now used it many times. I first used the resin infusion kit to make some parts for my own car, I followed the other Easy Comps videos to make the moulds too. Everything pretty much went as expected, bar a couple of mistakes which were my fault. Since buying the starter kit I have bought more of all the consumable items; they're cheaper when you buy larger quantities but that's understandable. My criticism of the kit would be that I think there should be maybe 2 more silicone connectors, after between 5 and 10 uses the connectors start to perish and need replacing. I now buy 20 at a time because I'm doing infusions regularly and like to have a supply on hand. All in all, a great starter kit backed up with the video tutorials and always the expert help of the EC team, thanks guys, you've got a customer for life :)
